Birdbox 2023: new home, new location, new birdbox

2022 was all about moving house

 

so I didn't have time to fire-up the birdbox system or even keep my eye on nesting progress.

And I'm not sure that this year will be much better, but here goes.

Laptop Power Hack

My Entroware Orion laptop developed a very annoying power problem. 

 

Sometimes it would unexpectedly go flat while in use with the power supply plugged in!

So what to do: send it back or bodge it?

Knepp: White Stork Reintroduction

Its been a good year for white storks at the Knepp Estate.

 

And we have been very fortunate to be involved in a very small way as volunteers.

Birdsong ID Apps: BirdNET

I was looking for a phone app that would identify bird song.

 

I have a de-Googled phone, so it needed to be one I could install from an APK package.

And of course, it had to be free.

Geeqie is a great application for viewing photos.

 

Its easy to display photo data (e.g. EXIF) and even chose how & what you want to display.

Gimp: Trim photos for required Aspect Ratio

I generally trim my photos for what I consider to be the best composition.

 

So I end up with a photo collection of odd shaped rectangles.

But sometimes it is necessary to trim them to a pre-defined aspect ratio, maybe for publication.

Radio Caroline North: using the Manx Radio stream

Most of the time I listen to the Radio Caroline album channel.

 

But once a month, Radio Caroline North transmits from the Ross Revenge.

How can you receive these broadcasts if you are not within a reasonable distance of the transmitters?

Firefox Developer Tools: a simple example

I don't use Developer Tools very often, so its a bit of a struggle remembering how to use them when I do.

 

Therefore this is a handy reminder to me (as much as anything) on how to make & test some simple edits.

I'm going to use the Gambas One forum as my test site for this example.
